CELEBRATING SEATTLE’S FEDERAL CENTER SOUTH BUILDING 1202 AIA COTE TOP TEN GREEN PROJECT FOR 2013 The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) has selected ZGF’s Federal Center South Building 1202 as one of the top ten national examples of sustainable architecture and green design solutions to protect and enhance the environment. The program celebrates projects that are the result of a thoroughly integrated approach to architecture, natural systems, and technology. The jury commented that “the contrast between a very sleek exterior and more of a warm interior was intriguing…it’s really a beautiful place to work.” Building 1202 will be honored during the AIA 2013 National Convention in Denver, Colorado. ZGF Design Partner Allyn Stellmacher, AIA, LEED AP BD+C will also discuss the project on the exhibit floor at Booth #958 on June 20 from 2:50PM-3:00PM (MDT) during ARCHITECT Live. COLLABORATIVE AND FUNCTIONAL This highly sustainable building was included in the May issue of Contract, in its feature on modern, large offices that facilitate collaboration. Using biophilic design principles—connecting man to the natural world through design—the design team took cues from nature to create a workplace for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that is innovative, comfortable, and functional. Stair and skybridge links, lower workstation partitions, and areas for casual interaction ensure that users have face-to-face encounters on a daily basis, an important goal for this client. DOCUMENTING PROGRESS The story of Building 1202 is multifaceted. Realizing we were a part of a unique process, as well as designing a distinct building, ZGF began video documentation more than two years ago. Much like the project itself, the video tells an integrated story of the people—from the design team to Army Corps employees working in the new building—the systems, and strategies that have come together to support this client’s shifting culture and conserve precious resources in our natural and built environment. |
